There is an irritating little Royalist habit of counting Charles the second's reign from his fathers death as if by doing so they could forget that Britain had ever had a commonwealth.

Charles was a king at the time of the battle - king of Scotland, crowned at Scone on January 1. He didn't become king of England till much later, as jake says.
