The Sunday Express published the first crossword in a UK newspaper.

Today, some people buy a newspaper particularly for its crossword (in print or digital form) rather than the quality of its news or editorials.

Does the crossword influence your newspaper or magazine choice? I enjoy the cryptic in the Radio Times.

The first clue in the first crossword was a three letter word, slang for a coin. Bob.

I used to buy the Sunday Express just for the "skeleton" but stopped doing so when they upped the price & slashed the prizes.

A friend saves me the puzzle pages from the Mail so I don't need to buy the paper.

For a change I usually buy the i on a Friday or Saturday.

Did you ever win, davebro?

Only ones I remember winning were 2 x £25 runner-ups on the skeleton & £100 on Private Eye.

Better than a poke in the eye 🙂

I buy the i mainly for the puzzles although I was annoyed when they decided to no longer be the "cheapest newspaper" attribute which was what started me off with it.  It has deteriorated in content too since the early days. But I guess that's market forces at work.

I buy the Sunday Mail just for the crossword content. The rest usually goes in the bin after I've pulled out that section.

Do you buy the Mail on Sunday Prize Crossword books?

The Times for the numerical puzzles

Davebro3 exactly the same as me. I have an annual DM online subscription and each weekday there are 2 prize puzzles I can submit and one each Sat/Sun. I miss the two Sunday Express ones though and the Big Monday but with the cost of the paper plus the postage and slashed prizes my money is bette spent elsewhere.
