Does anyone know why legal documents going to court are tied in red ribbon?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I have no idea about the reason for the colour, but a brief tied up in pink string by a solicitor is to indicate that it is ready for court to the barrister. Its also very handy when you have a massive pile of papers to be able to search through them quickly without the papers going everywhere. Barristers also never take a briefcase to court so the briefs have to be tied so that they can easily be carried.
