I doubt the majority of people under 45, with no interest in military matters, are familiar with that meaning of the word

The question did not intimate that it was in common use. It distinctly said soldiers! Who are not common at all, and getting rarer every day.  

The point I was making was the fact it was used so infrequently, it would not be unusual for some folk to be unaware of its meaning.

 

I had family in the army so I knew what it was.
