ADSL 678 error
4 Answers
Any idea how to deal with a '678 error' on an ADSL modem? It's preventing access to internet and my friend's patience is wearing thin!
Thanks in advance.

The connection could not be completed because the remote computer did not answer
This error can occur if:
You are dialing the wrong number
There is a problem at your ISP or in the telephone network
Your modem is unable to handshake with remote modem before allotted time
Search on 'error 678' on google...i found the above straight away.hope this helps.

We had an error like this at one time (but not sure it was 678 error) which we eventually traced to our anti-virus / firewall software preventing access. It started suddenly and we assumed that the modem or line had failed but after much messing around found that the anti-virus had automatically updated itself and the new firewall was preventing the modem accessing the internet.
The way to check is to turn off the firewall and/or virus protection and try to connect. If you can connect, then physically disconnect the phone line to prevent any problems and get in touch with the software provider.

Cathyhuns - thanks for the suggestion, I'll certainly check that aspect and let you know the outcome.
Mattk - thanks too for Google suggestion. I had indeed tried that but kept getting references to dial-up connection problems yet my friend's the problem lies with an 'always on' ADSL setup.
Thanks for your help.
