...there was talk among the chattering classes of a military intervention to save the country.  Lord Mountbatten was mentioned by some as head of an interim administration.

Judging by the posts of a few here in AB, who appear to think our government is running the economy into a ditch, the intervention of a strong man/woman wouldn't be unwelcomed.

But who might it be?

If you want his majesty's forces to act on your behalf you'd have to select Charles. But since he'd see his roll as staying out of politics he'd have to name a proxy for himself.  Who do you think he might favour to make UK great again ?

Rumours about the 70s candidate have since emerged.  How much truth, if any, in them we'll probably never know.

Welby has demonstrated he's a man of flawed judgement. He won't do.

On a more serious note we do have one ex leader who has shown elder statesman qualities over recent years,  who is able to talk to ordinary people with some degree of respect... His views on Europe might be problematic though
