I wish to be given water and painkillers only. I already have a doctor's letter stating that I do not want to be rescuscitated.

you need to do a health and welfare POA.  it's still not legally binding though

Yes, the Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Form that should be on your GP records is legally enforceable under the Human Rights Act 

Your wishes must be taken into account but they are not legally enforceable and anyone who wishes to challenge them can seek the assistance of the Court of Protection.

I was in hospital with a broken leg in 2001 & the old chap in the next bed (dementia & broken hip) was, I think, being eased out of this world. I queried why he wasn't even being given drinks (he couldn't manage to drink himself) and they did get someone to help him drink.
