Before Being Given A Rice Cooker I'd Use Boil In The Bag Stuff.

Having used it a few times I got to wondering if it's another unnecessary kitchen gadget.  If I put one measure of rice in a pot with two measures of water, brought it to the boil, turned the heat off and let it sit for 10 minutes , would the rice be cooked?

I always use basmati rice & have always cooked it in a pan with a lid on the hob. I tend to use double the amount of boiled hot water to rice. So 1 cup of rice=2 cups of hot water. If you like the rice with a softer texture, you can add an extra half a cup of hot water. I Wash the rice at least 3 times in warm water. I add 1/2 a teaspoon of salt & a knob of butter or ghee. White Basmati rice would be cooked. I suspect you've done that before. Why buy another gadget for such a simple task?

We always cook rice in a saucepan. People have been cooking rice for centuries before electricity was invented.

Just follow the instructions on the pack; not all rice cooks in the same way.

 

It's like porridge. Those sachets are very expensive, any porridge can be cooked in a microwave 

barry; not if you don't have one.

If you don't have a microwave you're not burning money buying sachets of oats

I'd never buy sachets of oats. I use a nosebag.

Bring to the boil, stir well but gently, cover with a lid, put the heating as low as you can go & let it cook for 15mins. Turn gas off & leave to stand about 10mins

Exactly the same way as jack d...always perfect.

I use basmati only to go with curries...otherwise American long grain (avoiding the "quick cook" type!).

I also do the same as JD...but rinse, and then soak for 30 minutes. After putting the rice in the pot, I fill to 1 inch above. (This is from memory as I've not made rice in ages...also, the instructions are from Madhur Jaffrey)
