Watching the news last night,  I was gobsmacked at Starmer's ill-chosen language in welcoming the fall of Assad - tantamount to welcoming the Islamic terrorists who have taken control in Syria.  And now this morning he's telling the victors - who have apparently said they will now 'free Jerusalem'-  to renounce terror and violence.  Straightaway if you say so, Mr Starmer!  That'll show 'em!  Proof, if any were needed, that this embarrassment of a PM is living in Cloud Cuckoo Land.  He's off abroad again now speaking to Syria's Islamic neighbours - for what good that will do.

Assad or Isis (in another name) ? Henry Kissinger once said of the Iran/Iraq war that he wished both sides could lose.

untitled and nicebloke clearly have more faith in their leader than I have.

What should the PM have said?

Assad was a murderous tyrant and it can only be a good thing that he's off the political stage.

what gave you that impression naomi?

i think starmer is following the american lead which i consider to be cynical.

Adherents of Islam are pretty good at producing murderous tyrants.  Another will be along soon

Poor choice of words, one evil regime has been replaced by another.  Who is worse only time will tell.

I somehow dont think they will take a blind bit of notice of him.

Davebro 11.13 Wrong again. Another 4 and a half years  before they get re/elected . Enjoy.🤣

What amazes me is that Starmer thinks he's so very different from Assad. Both are self-serving liars who like to curtail free-speech. The only difference is that one has zero self-awareness.

the assad family is a drug cartel and effectively repurposed the syrian economy to produce and smuggle captagon across the middle east. it is a horrifying drug and thankfully not that common outside the region. the regime imprisoned and tortured dissidents en masse, has been credibly accused of bombing its own citizens, and was upheld by a despicable security state which based its authority on rape and torture, including of children. look at the revelations coming out of sednaya prison. big thumbs up from some people.

the idea that keir starmer is even remotely comparable with such a brood of parasites is absolutely laughable.

captagon use is also very very strongly associated with instances of jihadi terrorism and violence... worth knowing

I also am not sure what you would have wanted him say and am with TTT on this. I think Donald Trump has proved that diplomacy is not necessary for international politics

maybe if he just kept his gob shut?

"David Lammy labels the former Syrian President Assad  the Rat of Damascus and a butcher."

I recall similar jubilations and remarks when Colonel Gaddafi was deposed in Libya. For a taste of what is likely to happen in Syria, look there.

The mob who has taken control there is a jihadi group Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS). It is a former wing of al Qaeda and has long been designated a terrorist group and proscribed by the UK, the US and Russia. Meanwhile, the ridiculous apology for a government in the UK is already suggesting it will review the group’s status (as if they have enjoyed  a Damascene (pun intended) conversion to  liberalism and democracy having taken control by force).

I have news: there isn't a hope in hell of stability in Syria now or at any time in the foreseeable future. Scattered across the country are vast arsenals of weapons, hand firearms artillery and chemical weapons. There are hundreds of rebel factions eager to exploit the new chaos and, far from asylum seekers returning to Syria from Europe, there will soon be a new exodus once the chaos unfolds. Remember, you read it here first.

Mr Lammy may well be right. But there is a very good reason why places like Libya and Syria have to be ruled by tyrants. To see what happens when they are not (if you don’t already know) keep tuned to this station.

Which will come in very handy when the inevitable "invasion"of Israel is started. Golan Heights anyone?

What amazes me is that Starmer thinks he's so very different from Assad.

oh dear - but this is AB

rat with tail between legs is a mixed metphor and that was what the original poster may be complaining of

and the prime minister was an advocate once

the idea that keir starmer is even remotely comparable with such a brood of parasites is absolutely laughable.

be nice untittled ! they know not what they write ( and the mods are even worse - ter daaah !)

we never had an imperial interest in Syria ( French sphere of influence) and we are better out of it

( French got the syrian mandate when the Turkish Empire was broken up 1919 - fie too much detail for  AB!)

with no idea of what comes next, better or worse
