Sir Keir Starmer’s new unit to deepen ties with Brussels proves the Prime Minister took Brexit voters for fools during the election, Boris Johnson has said.

The former prime minister said Labour had “taken power by deception” by not saying it wanted closer ties with the EU.

He said Sir Keir had no mandate to set up the new team, which he branded a “Whitehall Surrender Squad”, and claimed the Prime Minister had “lied” during the campaign.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Mr Johnson said: “At a time when Starmer and Rachel Reeves have already managed to kill economic growth with their disastrous tax-hiking budget, this EU renegotiation is taking Britain in completely the wrong direction.

“Above all, Starmer has no mandate to do it. He has no mandate to set up the Whitehall Surrender Squad, and no mandate for these talks, any more than he had a mandate for tax rises. He lied about both.

“Labour has taken power by deception. We must of course respect the law and the constitution.

“But I call on everyone who cares about democracy – and the economic salvation of this country – to fight, fight and fight again for the freedoms the people voted for in 2016, and which they believed were secure.”

Has the electorate been fooled?

This has been covered fully in a couple of threads from gulliver (although they were more of the usual baiting threads calling brexit voters 'suckers', etc) and from ToraToraTora. We never got links from gulliver but he did retypr badly a few chunks of text from the Express (doesn't strile me as an Express reader) or from MSN.

I don't think the electorate was fooled - only 20% of them voted Labour. Even without the ludricrous "landslide" victory it would have been difficult to keep Labour from power this time.

Yes, the electorate has been fooled.  Mr Johnson is absolutely right.  This government is running roughshod over the nation and doing exactly as it pleases.

Is Khandro Gullivers opposite?

All governments ride roughshod over the voters, this goverment is no different to the one before it or the one before it.

I haven't seen any government do what this bunch have done - and are doing, DDIL.

Aye and some even do it bareback with all the usual results.

I'm relaxed about it. We elect a government for 5 years but surely no-one expects them to stick to their manifesto commitments and never do anything else. There was probably something in the manifesto or campaign messages anyway- some sort of bland statement about seeking more opportunities to improve trade or relations with the EU countries.

The public can make its mind up at local elections and more importantly at the next GE

Newmodarmy what a sensible point of view.

Traitor to the people, yes. Him and his ilk, are betraying the electorate. Remember the penalties for traitors? Didn't The Blair creature rescind the ultimate penalty?

Whether the manifesto is kept to or not there has to be a limit on how different, reality turns out to the stated aims, when they get into power. The 'changed circumstances' excuse can only be tolerated so far.

However there's no issue with communicating with the EU, but one needs the courage to tell them where they can put their unreasonable demands when the time comes. Something even past governments seemed utterly incapable of doing (although Boris did try his best but the internal border crepe means the whole thing still needs amending).

If the government capitulates on this latest farce it'll cost the first sane government to come later, a lot of public money to revert internal legislation, and inevitably cause ill will from the EU when the government tears up any traitorous agreement made previously, and point out they can $&%& whistle this time around for any undeserved unjustified "compensation", as it was they who caused the issue by negotiating with one of their own, instead of waiting for a true patriotic UK government to discuss any agreements with as intelligent adults wanting a geniune win/win situation.

Another Duplicate post from Khandro. Copied from someone else.Of course.

Boris accusing others of deception. That made me laugh. :○)

Nicebloke.  So you think Boris's so-called lies are anywhere near the same level as this Governments?  Don't make me laugh.

boris johnson is an extremely dishonest person. he's a hypocrite.

putting that aside... starmer was elected without really saying too much about what he would do. he gave the tories rope to hang themselves and sat quietly waiting for the election to go his way.

the reason he was able to do this was because our media completely failed to hold him accountable and the conservatives were too stupid and divided to land a hit on him. a competent media and opposition would simply not have allowed someone to gain power by doing this.

the other reason he was able to do so is because he understood how our ridiculous electoral system worked and that it's quite possible to get a huge majority on a tiny fraction of the vote. this is an utterly stupid way to run a country and the only reason we still do it that way is because the two parties are unwilling to surrender their monopoly on power.

the fact that we have such an unsatisfactory prime minister is because britain has extremely serious problems that have gone neglected for generations. it is very frustrating to see people moan about the symptoms and ignore the underlying causes.

//Starmer was elected without really saying too much about what he would do//

He did, however, tell us what he wouldn't do.  And then he did it.

A student of Conservatism indeed.

Starmer is a pathological liar, as are his political nearest and dearest. They've now found £50m for Syria but can't help a struggling OAP heat their home this winter.

What an absolute disgraceful shower this government is. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could spit.

Oh how I do hope, "It'll Be Freezing This Christmas" gets Christmas no 1.
