Ok I am often told that what to me is common knowledge, especially in astronomy, is not. So I thought I'd devise a little quiz to test the water. Have a go without googling or reading the other answers first.

1) What are the 8 planets in order going out from the sun?

2) What is the largest planet on our solar system?

3) What star is the brightest in our sky and how is it found in the sky?

4) What is the hottest planet in our solar system?

5) How far away is the closest star system to ours?

6) What is the star over the north pole and how is it found in the sky?

7) What is the crab nebula the remnants of?

8) What lies in the orbital space between Mars and Jupiter?

9)  What are the 4 Galilean moons of Jupiter

10) What is a pulsar?

I know the answers to 1 to 4 and 8 only

Question Author

These must be too trivial!

1. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus (I think the last two's orbits cross, so they are occasionally the other way around)

2. Jupiter

3. The Pole Star?

4. Mercury I guess.

5. Sorry, no idea. Several billion light years?

6. Okay, so that's the Pole Star.

7. A black hole?

8. A asteroid field

9. Sorry, dunno that one

10. Neutron Stars

Question Author

7. X

8. Correct

9. X

10. Half right

4.5/10 thanks for playing.

Surely Mercury's closeness to the sun makes it the hottest?

Unless you mean hottest looking, then it's sexy ol' Saturn 😍

Question Author

No the hottest surface temp is not mercury, look it up. Ironically on the planet in question it's caused by a runaway greenhous effect.

Well, everyday's a school day! Thanks for the quiz, I look forward to me being a TWAU subject soon lol

Question Author

12:28 on point 1 Pluto's orbit does dip inside that of Neptune and it is also not in the same plane as the rest of the planets. This led to it being declassified because it is now believed to be a kuiper belt object. Oddly enough the Neptunian moon Triton is also thought to be from the kuiper belt, captured by Neptune it orbits the planet in the opposite direction to all it's other moons.

1, Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn uranus Neptune Pluto
2 Jupiter?
3 the Northstar?
4 Mercury?
5 no idea
6 the Northstar?
7 no idea
8 the Oort cloud??

9 No idea
10 no idea

12:46 Makes sense. I had the wrong two planets intersecting then.

Question Author

12:47 1,2,6 correct 3/10

Pluto is not now considered a planet but it's in the correct order.

thanks for playing

Question Author

12:50 yes but I knew what you meant. Pluto was inside Neptune from Feb 1979 for approx 20 years.

Why have you put "common knowledge" in the title when the answers are patently NOT common knowledge.

Question Author

Well it follows on from my TWAU yesterday and this is my attempt to determine what is common knowlegde in this area. Clearly I have over estimated, I was just trying to determine by how much. Hence the phrase "test the water".

Question Author

I suspect the nit picker in chief will be along soon!

Any early conclusions then T? Are you of above average astronomical knowledge or are we thickos 😂

Question Author

Astronomy is a specialist subject of mine but these questions are very basic, I'd expect secondary school GCSE astronomy pupils would know.

And there you have it straight from the horse's mouth.   People who are interested in a subject find out about it.  Those who aren't interested don't.  It's not rocket science.  ;o)

It's the wrong galaxy for me. If it was ten questions on the Star Wars galaxy, I'd have aced the quiz!

Question Author

13:15 why not post such a quiz yourself?
