Technically it was 'Flowers In The rain' by the Move as the first record was 'Beefeaters' by John Dankworth which was the Tony Blackburn show's theme tune. If you don't count that then the Move were the first record and 'Massachusetts' by the Bee Gees was the second. No matter how I spell the name of that Bee Gees song it looks wrong...

Radio One was opened by Tony Blackburn in September '67 and here starts a big debate....I maintain that the record everyone thinks is the first to be played on air by the station (The Move - Flowers in the Rain) was actaully the second as the first had been played a few minutes earlier.......Both Radio One and Radio Two were rolled out simultainiously and the then controller Robin Scott said a few anodyne words, they played George Martin's wonderful new theme for Radio One which he'd called 'Theme One' and then at 7.00am ex-Radio Caroline DJ Tony Blackburn started on 247m, playing The Move's 'Flowers In the Rain' as his first record.

A great footnote to this story is that when Radio One went to continuous Stereo broadcast in the early eighties, Roy Wood was guesting on Steve Wright's show (it may have been the breakfast show), Steve said to Roy how great it must be to finally hear his record in crystal-clear stereo. Roy knowingly went along with him, but failed to let Steve in on the gag..... the recording was in Mono! (Personally I remember setting my alarm especially to hear the George Martin theme mentioned earlier.... great stuff!)
