china has leveraged that interest politically. panama for instance has made the reprehensible decision to "recognise" taiwan as the territory of the PRC. the idea that the chinese have influence over the panama government is to be fair not pie in the sky. however there is no way for the US to gain control of the canal without breaking a cast-iron treaty with panama (unless they invade and occupy the country which would be an incredibly stupid thing to do).

It might be a bit too complicated for you to understand but Greenland is slowly being unshackled from the colonial grip of Denmark and is currently what is being called part of the Danish Realm. Denmark still has some control of what happens there and knowing that it is soon to be gone trying to cash in on the mineral rights and licensing stitch ups. Bribe money we used to call it. Likewise the Greenland semi autonomous admimistrationseems to be blinded by the goal of full political autonomy from Denmark, and China has been able to gain a monopoly over the rare earth elements found in Greenland.
