Us Imposes Tariffs
of 25% against goods imported from canada and mexico and a further 10% against china
this violates the trade agreement struck between canada mexico and the USA in 2018. china has accused the USA of breaching WTO rules and canada has reciprocated with tariffs against american goods. mexico looks likely to do the same..
what on earth is the point of this? who benefits from a trade war between these countries?

are we joined at the hip ? I am with you on this - There is the usual gormless mirror thread on this from TTT
Even in the thirties ( Britih=sh) Empire preference - didnt work.
Free trade has been around since at least the 1840s
I note also that since China is very strong and may really object - their tariff is less. - Poor old Trudeau was almost in tears - when he said - "they have just done this!" - and then when he continued in French the Beeb cut heem orf
the US has also promised to imposee a 100% tariff on semiconductors from Taiwan while also ending subsidies to promote their manufacture in the USA
so this vital technology would be simultaneously more expensive to import and also receive less support to manufacture in the US. it's incoherent. it's like a policy designed to damage the country's economy
If someone bullies, bully back. Raise tarrifs on their goods by 5% more than they imposed on you. Make sure you have deals elsewhere in the meantime to cover the drop in trade. Claim you are doing it to make your country great again. Watch who blinks first (probably the next president in five years time).
things are going to get quite costly for ordinary americans... canada and mexico account for an absolutely huge proportion of american oil imports. and that's before you start thinking about raw materials, food, consumer goods, computers, timber etc.
all those things are about to get much more expensive. any US businesses which rely strongly on those markets will also lose revenue.
this will cause a huge amount of completely pointless and unnecessary harm both inside the USA and outside. i hope the idiots who voted for this are proud of themselves.
When Canada stops letting the Mexican drug cartels manufacture fenatyl and sending it South the tariffs will be lifted. Couple of points. The US does not need to imports gas or oil. When the Biden policies are negated and production is resumed the Us can be net exporters. Secondly the oil exported from Canada is mainly from Alberta. In Canada the resources are owned by the provinces not the state ... ie Alberta owns the oil and is not going to relinquish the income because other provinces are harbouring and abetting drug cartels. Read the essay by Elizabeth Nickson about Canada being a failed State( she is Canadian and smart) and wise up instead of getting emotional.
ps the new Canadian PM in waiting, Pierre Poilievre, is an Albertan.
