Depends on the type of underwear. Men - the loin cloth has been worn since ancient times (at least as far back as the egyptians, and can be said to be the forefunner of your average boxers. Women didn't start to wear drawers until 17th century France and Italy. The corset can be traced back to 2000BC and although the modern bra wqas invented in 1912 Egyptians wore a saran which covered the breasts.

knickers were "apparently" invented to keep trousers, skirts etc clean..this theory makes me wonder whether us girls are going to have by refreshers for panty liners in the future to keep them clean
