Households with at least one foreign national claimant received more than £7.5 billion in universal credit in 2023, figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) show.

Foreign nationals become eligible for universal credit and other benefits on the same terms as British citizens once they are granted indefinite leave to remain and have settled or refugee status.  Telegraph.

How long can this go on?

It's a bit more than what is being reported here, the whole benefits fiasco needs addressing, foreigner or not.

Labour looked like they had the balls to do it but have u-turned already.  About what we should expect from Sir flip flop I suppose.

what are they counting as a foreigner and what are they counting as a benefit?

"what are they counting as a foreigner and what are they counting as a benefit?"

They say "foreign nationals", so presumably those without a UK passport. And they only mention Universal Credit.

Labour's raison d'etre revolves around prioritising helping the needy in society so if benefits rachet up over the years they are going to have problems with their members when trying to cut benefits back.  That's really the job of a party that gives lower priority to the needs of the hoi polloi, and prefers to use them as resources for the business owners to use as required.

Economists are generally in agreement that foreign nationals living in the UK contribute more per capita in terms of taxes and economic gain, than per capita of the indigenous population.

How long can this go on – with foreign nations unfairly contributing more to the economy than their British counter-parts?

//Economists are generally in agreement//

Economists like Ms Reeves?

Hymie, the OP is about £7.5 billion being handed to people who are not British and have never made any contribution to the British economy.

Hymie 14.35.  Where did you get that?

hymie: "Economists are generally in agreement that foreign nationals living in the UK contribute more per capita in terms of taxes and economic gain, than per capita of the indigenous population." - think we are going to need some supporting data for that fantasy me old china. Who are these "economists"?

If if we are stupid enough to give it, they are clever enough to take it. We are the fools here tolerating this.

I thought they were all doctors, nurses and scientists arriving on our shores?

Send em back.

Better still do not let them in.

We should think of the potential for hybrid vigour.

This influx could be just what we need, give us a new lease on life.

sandyRoe, hybrid vigour..all thoes people from first cousin marriges, vigour erm genetic defects, Sickle cell anemia from africans, aids tb and a plethora of other viruses, just what the uk needs, oh and there cultural practices, fancy a little fgm misogyny burka enforced 0 integration, woman who are just breeders and chained to the proverbial kitchen.

sandyRoe, seldom have I read such a banal, treacherous, ill thought out post. For shame.

"Hymie, the OP is about £7.5 billion being handed to people who are not British and have never made any contribution to the British economy."

The benefit is for the household, only one of which needs to be neither British nor Irish.

That means there could be British or Irish folk in the household included in the claim.

You have no clue about any Universal Credit claimant’s employment history or contribution to the British economy.

Thecorbeyloon.... are you suggesting that in such a household its tge foreign national who is working and contributing but it's the UK citizens who are not contributing and therefore claiming universal credit for the household?

The make up of the households is not known, neither is the employment histories of those in the households.

I am stating the money is not going only to foreigners and it is incorrect to claim none of the foreigners has contributed toward the British economy since we have no idea whether they have worked and paid taxes in this country.

sandyRoe 20:19,why not adopt one if you love them so much.
