if you are entitled to 8 bank holidays, in your holiday entitlement, does this mean you have to work on christmas day?

No, England and Wales has 8 bank holidays in 2005, and Scotland has 7.

But if your contract states that you work christmas day, then you have agreed to work on christmas day.
There is no statutory obligation to time off on a Bank Holiday and there are eight holidays in Scotland not seven.
By having x bank holidays it means you get x days off - it doesn't have to be on the bank holiday itself but can be on a replacement day instead.

So depending on what else your contract says then yes it is possible that you could have to work on Christmas day.
As Ethel and dzug have said, you must first look on your contract of employment. This will spell out exactly what your holiday entitlement is, and whether you will be expected to be available for work on bank or public holidays.
(NOTE: Christmas Day is not a bank holiday in England and Wales; it is a public holiday in common law, as is Good Friday).

Thank you for your answers, I'm still a bit confused, if Xmas day is a public holiday, then where does the 8 Bank Holidays come in ?
It says nothing about Xmas on my contract though only that I'm entitled to 8 Bank Holidays.
