Because they use a sodium vapour, which gives out yellowish light.

The orange light tends not to be as glaring as the white light that other types of lamps emit.

h.p.s. high pressure sodium - usually streetlights, l.p.s. -low pressure sodium used in tunnels and underpasses. metalarc halide also used in streetlights, blueish white light.

i live in canada, we use h.p.s. in our streetlights, much brighter than l.p.s., as i said we use in tunnels and underpasses.
