Having tried everything else, including bleach, we found that a solution of tea tree oil and water, sprayed daily for about a week, would finally kill it. Unfortunately, it didn't get rid of the black stain, though.
excellent, thankyou...
what kind of quantities did you use, would tea tree on its own remove it faster?, i need to clean it before i get the landlord to fix the ceiling and roof, ive left it a bit long to ring them really! and i want to make it look less bad before they come and see it, the roof is still leaking!

We got one of those general purpose spray bottles (I don't know how big - maybe 300 ml?) put in about 10 drops of tea tree oil, topped up with water, and shook it vigorously.
Neat might well get rid of it quicker, but here in Greece at least, tea tree oil is hard to get, and very expensive.
