Back in the day, Alex Van Halen had a drum kit with 4 bass drums. Did he really use them all (with the aid of some modified bass pedal)?

Or was he some sort of poser?

It was mainly for show BUT he did have a Simmons kit (electronic drum pads) with 2 bass drums pads plus his two bass drums and so he did some time play '4' bass drums.
