he wasnt being cheeky, he was asking, seriously was the teacher joking,
a couple of weeks later, they put him into the year above, then a couple of months later he sat his A level maths exam
the maths we were doing at 14, he had done when he was 10.
their schooling seems to be more effective, and starts from a younger age,
i dont know any reason if or why russains are as a collective more inteligent, maybe its cause they dont get bull**** in schools, i think they still have the ability/permission to hit the kids who arent behaving..

By "hackers" do you mean what the media call crackers? Or do you just mean talented people with interests in learning more, and experimenting with things?
And yea, there are a lot of good mathematicians and theoretical physicists and chess players that come from Russia, or once-associated countries.
Basically due to the way the country used to be run. It wasn't that safe to go out all the time, and they didn't have a lot of money. Paper and pencils are fairly cheap though, and a chess set doesn't cost that much either, so it's something that people can do. It's also down to the way education is perceived in Russia: people good at maths often aren't laughed at for being geeky or nerdy.

I spent a little time there and found that its a bit of a generalisation to say things like they are the best at this and that and they are too poor to have things to do.
The fact is that they have more discipline to achieve in what they do.
The lad who i visited spent his evenings playing chess and practising his work because he wanted to leave Moscow, whereas his friend did the same as he wanted to join the military. Not all the children in his year did the same though, they just didnt have the chav culture that we do and the theory that the state owes them a living.
You will notice that a lot of chinese kids are the same, it does come from the communist roots of their government but ultimately it is the choice of the individual.
They have a culture that is very competitive and that if they want to achieve they need to work hard because they arent pandered to by their parents.
