I can't remember which of these featured the episode where a prisoner arranges his escape by sneaking into in a coffin when an inmate dies having bribed the prison chaplin to let him out before the burial only to find too late that the prison chaplain had died and he had snuck into his coffin and became buried alive... I still have nightmares about it to this day!
Never went too much on the various TV horror series... but I loved the original Hammer Dracula films with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, which were shown regularly late at night when I was a kid, but now are hardly seen. Between the fabulous sets, impressive Victorian costumes, eerie horse-drawn hearses, gorgeous blondes in flowing nightgowns and totally po-faced hammy acting, they were my idea of heaven - and I never once had the nightmares my mother used to threaten..!!
I used to watch those TV Hammer House of horror short things in the eighties...particularly psychologiclly damaging (!!) was the one that started with a back view of a cute little girl seemingly stroking a small lamb...then she turns round & she's actually eating it (she was a werewolf)
My gran used to let me watch them when she babysat me & I've never been so scared in my life (well I was only about 10!)
My favourite was the episode of Hammer House Of Horror was "Two Faces Of Evil", I remember when Gary Raymond is chasing his wife into a barn, she then thinks she's safe, but turns round and her kid is in the barn as well, and it turns out he's a doppleganger as well, with horrible teeth, she then pleads to the farmer, screaming that she's being chased/attacked. When she turns round, her husband and child are waving at her from the barn, that was one of the most frightening things I watched when I was a kid.....chilling stuff, but marvellous all the same. I also liked the Sapphire and Steel adventure with the army ghost who haunted an old railway station, and he used to whistle "Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit Bag", my Dad used to whistle that just to freak me out hahaha.....
Does anyone remember these "Tales Of The Unexpected" episodes. The first was about a tramp who had a tattoo on his back and I think an art dealer wanted to buy it off him, the end scene was the tramps skin stretched in a frame in the art dealers shop window. The second was about a bee keeper, I can remember that he made his own honey/wax or something, can anyone remember this one????.
My favourite is the fairly recent "Freakylinks". Unfortunately, after a creepy opening, the production team were told to tone things down :-(. There's still a couple of episodes that hint at something darker, though.
P.S. Didn't the "TotU" with the bees have something to do with Royal Jelly, and feeding it to a baby?

Some excellent answers. One of my favorites was in the Tales of the unexpected when a man bets another man that his lighter won't light 10 times in a row, if he wins he'll give the man his Rolls Royce(I think) but if he loses he will chop off his little finger. Can't remember what happened except for a woman shouting "STOP" and opening a draw full of fingers. Brilliant.
