I loved Barbara's face when nan asked her to "do" her toenails, and then when she was trying to hold back the tears I was crying my eyes out. I watched the programme with my husband who hates the show, he grumbled for the first few minutes then I noticed a few smiles and even some tears. He would never admit it, but he enjoyed it too. It was wonderful stuff.
I'm in 2 minds about it. The 'classic' bits were as good as ever, but to be honest, I don't think the writers have the ability to carry off the 'serious stuff' with panache. It was just too mawkish and simplistic. And all too predictable, as others have said. Just compare to John Sullivan's handling of death (and other serious issues) in 'Fools & Horses'.
Sorry, but stick to what you can do well.
They have whole new horizons opening up with little David; I hope she does some more.

Regrettably (and I mean that, as I'm a massive fan), I didn't think much of last night's episode. Of course, being The Royle Family, there was some truly golden stuff, but the whole thing seemed to be much more overtly emotionally manipulative and sentimental than usual. I got a lump in the throat when Nan said she loved Barbara, for example, as it was...organic (for want of a better word), and unexpected in view of what had gone before, but even then they dragged on the scene for a bit too long. To me, the whole brilliance of the programme is in its distilling and putting into focus the emotions that underpin everyday interaction/ relationships between family and friends without banging you about the head with it.
I am, however, clearly in a minority on this one! In view of the heights it has reached before, I'll let Aherene & Cash off...

I did watch it to the end. Maybe because I'd been so excited to watch it and I was expecting so much i was disappointed. I thought some scenes dragged and some were rushed. I'm used to the Royle Family being slow and not too much happening. Maybe when I watch it again I'll think it's better, I won't be expecting so much from it.
To the people that have said spurslady spoilt them watching - you guess at the start what happens anyway!

I can read very well, spurslady, which is exactly why your spoiler spoilt it for me - if I couldn't read it wouldn't have been a problem would it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (See, I got a bag of exclamation marks for Christmas as well!)
That said, I have now watched it, and I thought it was brilliant. Wasn't the hospital scene the first time we've ever seen the family away from their house? Very moving.
