I've read a lot about echinacea. Is there any proof it works? How should I take it?

Originally from the US, it was used by native tribes as an antiseptic and snake-bite remedy. There has been a trend for people in this country to take it as a precautionary measure against winter colds and flu, but many experts believe that it works best when taken at the first sign of a cold or flu symptom. You can buy echinacea as a tincture (concentrated liquid) or in tablet form from health food shops or pharmacies. Follow the instructions on the label."
