what does the "s" stand for on superman`s outfit, as he was only given the nickname superman after saving lois lane and the "s" was allready on his outfit

I dont know what is stands for, but it I think it is a sort of family crest.In the first movie (the Christopher Reeve one) the Krypton high council all wear a different sybol on the outfits, and Dur El (spelling?) has the S sybol on his.

On Smallville it started off as an 8.

I would think the true answer goes back to what jamwan55 says, it was on the costume as created in the original comic strip by Misters Siegel and Shuster.
And I would think back then, stood for Superman.

Only with hindsight, and the retelling of the story from different points of view, would other writers come up with different solutions, like the symbol seen as a family emblam ( as TEAK36 points out ) in the 1970's Superman film.

The outfit itself has different origins. In one it is created by martha Kent. In Smallville, there is a mural of a duck figure in blue and red superhero outfit on the wall of the High School, and we could see that as being the inspiration.

The S is definatley a family crest insignia. As mentioned in the first movie all the other members of the council have different insignias. The house of El carries the S as shown in the suit. There is a place called the "Valley of the Elders" which was visited by Superman in "Superman Returns" but was cut from the theatrical release due to not being deemed as needed in the overall film. Bryan Singer does intend to release a version of the film that does include the deleted scene but not in the edition that comes out Dec 8th.
