Does anyone know James Herriot's real name? Also,what was the name of the actual village that 'Darrowby' was based on.Finally,is he dead? If so,when? Cheers!

His real name was Alfred White, and I believe he is dead.

His name is Christopher Timothy and he now does adverts for dead people.
I believe he spelt it Wight, not White.
I think Darrowby was based on Thirsk.
We visited his museum when we were in Thirsk a couple of years ago. If you're in the area it's well worth a visit. It's in the actual house where he lived and worked. Here's the website. http://www.hambleton.gov.uk/hambleton/herriot.nsf/

You're welcome. I loved all his books as well.
In the TV series, Darrowby is actually Askrigg, North Yorks, near to Aysgarth Falls. Whether or not this was the inspiration for the original fictional Darrowby I don't know, but it's certainly based on that area.
