shower pump twin or single

Hi Guys
Can anyone tell me why there are twin impeller pumps and single impeller pumps. I mean the pump in my airing cupboard has a inlet and outlet on either side of the pump one side for cold and the other for hot. I'm just wondering why would you have a single pump.

Or to boost the hot if the incoming mains is higher then your hot feed pressure
