Fly agaric mushroom
4 Answers
These were extensively used and a central to European culture before the introduction of vodka (The Vikings, Beserkers etc). As they are fairly adundant and not known to be toxic to the level of fatalies, then why do people favour the Liberty cap mushroom as the choice of drug? Is there a difference in the effect they have on the mind? I've not taken either so I dont know.

also there are number of other very similar looking shrooms that are deadly so the risk of picking the wrong one probably puts people off
they are also quite hard to find and not especially abundant
liberty caps are very small - the bell is on average about the size of a kidney bean, but some can get bigger if left longer, so you usually need a fair few, which is ok because they grow all over the place and usually there are lots of them about - though only for a few months a year.
