On the question of IDHA or IDHI, I was interested that JimJools thought "both are right". On the wider question, has anyone asked the DT whether they accept alternative answers in such situations? Or do they opt for one answer - and that's it?

I have put a diagonal line across the last little square, with 'A' in one half and 'I' in the other.
Hi Aquagility, I have opted for IDHI - I have based my dicision on this - If I put IDHA into google nothing comes up on the 1st page for a mountain in Crete, but if I put in IDHI there are several hits for a mountain in Crete. Also Wikipeadia lists both for the Highest Mountain in Crete. Which is why I said I thought both are correct. It is a bit tenuous I know, but I could find nothing else to go on. I hope I have made the right decision as mine is in the post now, so too late to change it. :-)
Theree's a similar dilemma in The MOS today where they ask a question about an island in the Balearics near Majorca and the answer could be Minorca or Menorca - I wish crossword compilers would avoid such questions
The clue specifies `alt.spelling` - this appears to mean an alternative to IDHI which is the name shown on most maps. Does this mean IDHA is the answer i.e. an alternative spelling?

Thanks for all your ideas. my own opinion is that they decide on one solution - I've never seen alternatives given in the published 'correct answers'.
I wish they would not do it, but in some papers it's obvious that the compiler has gone out of his way to find clues with alternative solutions.
