Broadband set up help needed

My friend has recently switched Broadband supplier from Tiscali to Sky. Part of the deal with Sky was that he gets a new netgear wireless router/modem. His Tiscali service stopped about 3 weeks ago and his Sky broadband was supposed to start last Friday. When he plugs his new router into the telephone line the i symbol is illuminated to confirm the internet is connected, but he can't access it on his pc. He can't even get the routers homepage (the 192.......... page) (He is connecting via the ethernet cable at the moment not wireless). Sky have told him he needs to install a driver to be able to use the router. Is this correct? I am sure that I didn't need one when I got my Netgear router/modem.
