I want to wash my car with more than just water, but I'm not really keen on spending a tenner plus on shampoo. I have used washing up liquid before but when my dad phoned and I told him, he was, erm, very cross. Is there another cheap (preferably found around the house), safe to use on my car alternative?

Shower gel .
I have always used fairy liquid and never had any probs
It's not advisable to use up washing up liquid to wash your car as it can have an adverse affect on the paintwork. My advice would be to get some low cost supermarket brand car shampoo if you don't want to spent a lot. These are available for under a quid and will last for several washes.
If you don't want to spend much on keeping your car clean let this man do it....................

The problem with washing up liquid is it contains salt. Salt and car bodywork are not a good mix.
Whatever you do DON'T use washing up liquid.

it contains degreasers and detergents that will strip your car of all the protection and therefore dirt and contaminants from road traffic will eat at the paintwork and cause it to dull.

Obviously some people really aren't bothered either way but if you're anything like me you will be.

The average cheap ones that are OK are things like Turtlewax etc. I'd say they're defo worth spending the money on especially if you don't wax your car every few months.
Got to agree. I used to be a valeter and the relatively low cost of a decent wash and wax shampoo is far outweighed by the loss of money when you come to sell the car and it looks like someone's had a go at it with a scourer! Once a month is all it takes. A bottle should last 2 years or so!
stardrops.
Vim !!!
Slippery....I think our views are wasted on this question.

Got to agree Spartacus! Phillistines the lot of 'em! Would be interesting trying Vim on my ex's car tho :)
What a load of rubbish from Spartacus and Slippery. Nothing wrong with washing up liquid and it does not contain salt.

Spartacus' comment about detergents is just hilarious.
Gef,

come back when you know what you're talking about muppet!!!!

Washing up liquid doersn't contain salt ? Since when ? It's b****y terrible stuff and should have absolutely no place anywhere near a car bodywork.

Spend a little cash and do it properly.
