No. It is not an immigration requirement.

However it could be useful (other ferry comanies could vary - check their websites):

Irish Ferries recommend you bring your passport when travelling abroad. Irish and British citizens do not strictly require a passport to travel between the two countries - some form of identification is however required.

Photo ID, Bank Cards or bills for house utilities addressed to you are all acceptable and useful means of identification. Please note that all other nationalities require passports.

Non-EU nationals should check with the British Embassy before travelling as they may need a visa.

all is correct above but non eu nationals will have to check with their own embassys and not the british one. The bristish embassy does not have time to deal with all the citizens of all the world.

If someone is travelling TO the UK then yes they should check with a BRITISH Embassy whether they need a visa. That's what they are there for, in part. Their own Embassy will have second hand or zero information. If they needed a visa they would not get it at their own Embassy, but at a British one .

If they are travelling TO Ireland then it's the Irish Embassy they should check with. (The info I gave is from Irish Ferries and is probably unconsciously assuming travel from Ireland to the UK)

dzug, the questionn was if they need a visa to travel to Ireland from mainland UK. assuming that the passenger is in Uk the only 2 embassies that can tell them (assuming they are non EU) if they need a visa is the Irish embassy or their own embassy. Why involve the british embassy just because you are now in the UK??

That's Irish Ferries for you, Dom Tuk - I was just quoting them. Clearly they are thinking from the Irish end. I should have left out the last para really.

But I'd disagree about asking your own country's embassy about the requirements to travel to another country. If I as a British citizen ask the FCO or a British Embassy if I need a visa to travel to X, they won't tell me. They will tell me to contact the Embassy/Consulate of the country concerned.
