speakers

I have quite an elderly packard bell desktop running windows 98, still works mainly ok but all of a sudden i cant hear any sound,tried a few things and apparantly my speakers are disabled, could anyone tell me how to rectify this, please reply as though you are talking to a 5 year old and keep it very simple as not very PC literate

Try Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds > Audio > Audio playback > Volume

Hopefully there will be boxes to untick.!
