Stiff Gear Stick

The gear stick of my car is very stiff when it is in 1st and 2nd gear. My shoulder feel the reaction force when the gear is engaged and I feel pain some time. Anyone know what happen and what I should do?

if it is stiff going into reverse as well it could be a sticky clutch.how easy is it to change through the gears when the engine isn't running? easy means cluth prob, difficult means gearbox. (not 100% accurate, just a rough guide. )

The reverse gear is alright. Mainly the 1st and 2nd gear that give me the problem. When the engine is not running, I still feel the same. So, I think it is a gearbox problem now. Do you think I need to fix it ASAP? Any harm to my car? Thanks.
