Tilsley name ? coat of arms / meaning
Hi all
Im researching the tilsley family for my mother in law and am wondering if theres anyone out there with info that may help .
Names in the tree i already have are :
alfred tilsley(b.1905) son of George tilsley (b.1873)and florence annie keen(b.1871)
George Tilsleys mum and dad was Thomas tilsley (b.1851) and Fanny giles (b.1851)
Thomas tilsleys mum and dad was Thomas tilsley (b.1826) and Elizabeth brotherton (b.1828)
Thomas tilsleys mum and dad was William tilsley (b.1776) and Elizabeth Barrat
they all came from Aston Birmingham (deritend and duddeston) and shifnal , Blymhill staffordshire
Any info any one has about the tilsley family tree or surname origin would be much appreciated
Coat of arms info would also be greatly recieved
Sorry if its asking too much but i have already spent a small fortune and 100's of hours searching thought i'd try here and see if i can get any further
Thank you all

Have you checked Burke's Peerage and any other site that covers Armoral Bearings? Have you found any evidence that there were ever Arms granted to anyone with that the surname? Even if they were. you are not entitled to use them unless you have the right conderred on you by inheritence or purchase.
Have you found the above baptismas and marriages from the IGI? If so you need to check the actual Church Registers of the particular Parish to establish more info on the lines to confirm you have the right family. You can either go to the local studies library for the Town the Parish is in, go to the County Record Office where the Bishops Transcripts may have been deposited, or even order the film into your local Family Records Centre (usually attached to a Mormon Church), unless you look at the original records and also get to check the burial registers, you will not be able to confirm anything else much at all.
One other option may be checking the Quarter Session records at the County Record Office to see if anything crops up there.

Hi Dot , Many thanks for your reply ,
didn't really understand your reply (guess i should of stayed on at school lol)
Re - coat of arms - there is one as my mother in law has a picture in her hallway of it . Could you explain further about the right to use (inheritence or purchase ) . I would ask my mother in law for it to take a copy but it is for a surprise presant i need it for .
My plan is - as i am a watercolour painter - to paint her family tree with some symbols personal to her inc. coat of arms .
I would like to also know about the tilsley surname , as all the documents i have purchased so far (marriage , birth , death certificates) i am putting in a scrap book and would like surname origin and meaning for the front cover .
Also what is IGI? - i have found out about the above people through genes reunited, ancestry .com and talking to my mother in laws family .
Getting really frustrated with this whole family history lark , if i didn't know how much it means to her to find out about her dads family i wouldn't bother !
I do sometimes feel like giving in and admiting defeat - after all she doesn't even know i have started itand i dont know about others but it seems to be taking over my life lol
(Time wise and financially ).
Oh well guess im no researcher (whine over)
Thanks any way -

squidgey, can't you just sneak a photo of the coat of arms while she's looking the other way?
Sorry, don't know any Tilsleys myself. But here's the IGI (Mormon) site; it's pretty easy to search, though you should always get a second source for anything on it if you're seriously trying to construct an infallible family tree:

Hi all ,
many thanks for your replies
i have decided to give up with the family tree for a bit as it was taking up all my time and costing me a fortune (money that i havent really got this side of xmas) .
I didnt really get anywhere to tell you the truth every relative i did find was taking days/weeks to find / confirm.
Ive haven't ever been any good at researching (hated it at school and college)
But many thanks to you all for your help though .

Hiya
Now that you have this info, the next step is to look at the actual Parish Register entry for the baptisms and marriages of these earlier ancestors, I know the IGI can seem a brilliant source, but in the actual registers you will find more information.
The Bishop Transcripts at the County Recvord Office should be easy to check, these are on microfilm and as you have the date from the IGI it won't take too long to find them, check out the marriage entry to confirm the fathers of Thomas and his bride and thewn also look for the baptisms of Thomas, this will give you info on the parents and confirm you are right with William and Elizabeth, it is likely the Tilsley family were in the same parish for a while and so it may be worth checking the Quarter Session records for the county too for any instances of the name.
