In order to solve and arguement, am I correct in thinking that a company (in the UK) cannot make permanent staff redundant and still employ temporary staff. I understand that all temporary staff must be dismissed before permant staff.

It is not the person who is made redundant, it is the job that is made redundant.
Therefore if a temp. is working in another department doing a different job it wont effect them.
Sometimes a firm will transfer an employee to another department rather than make them redundant, but more often than not, it is a way of getting rid of rotten wood.
