renewing my norton internet security?

i have recently ran out of my Norton security and have tried to renew it only to find it is telling me to delete the Norton thats already ran out now im no computer whizz any idea's?

If you look in your programs list (from the Start menu), you'll probably find that alongside Norton, there's an 'uninstall' option. If so, that's what you should use.

Otherwise, you need to use the Add/Remove programs function. In pre-XP versions of Windows, it's accessed from Start > Control Panel. In XP it will be somewhere similar but probably a bit harder to find. (You can guess that I'm not a fan, or user, of XP!).

Once you've uninstalled the older version of Norton, you can install the new one but I have to ask the question, WHY?

Norton costs money. You can protect your PC just as well for free, by using a combination of AVG Free Edition (as your anti-virus software) and Zone Alarm Free Edition (as your firewall):

Buenchico is right. I had the same problem. Unlike other renewals/upgrades Norton does not automatically remove the old program and install the new. I had a lot of problems until Norton sent me an email saying it was not their fault as per the following:

'Dudley, Symantec strongly recommends that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. Your best defense against computer viruses and malicious programs is to keep your virus definitions up to date, and run Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time. (The Norton AntiVirus module that is active in memory is named Auto-Protect. Other antivirus programs will have different names for this function.)
You can delete Windows defender, Spybot search and destroy'.

After deleting the other anti virus programs and uninstalling the original Norton program, the renewal worked fine and I have had no further problems. I still run AdAware and SuperAntiSpyware though, without problems.

By the way I am not technology competetant, just a regular computer user. A bit like being able to drive a car but would have no idea about the mechanics.

pcwork, why do you keep on insisting that Norton is free.
Symantec charge through the nose for the ongoing use of that bloated, resource-hungry piece of software called Norton.
