does anybody remember a drama or film from the 1970's that involved a convict escaping every night from prison and getting up to no good. Then returning to prison. He was eventually caught because he had smuggled a bird into his cell. If you do remember anything like this, what was it called?

The only one that springs to mind with me is 'Two Way Stretch' with Peter Sellars where he breaks out to commit the prefect robbery and then breaks back in again but I doubt it is the same one..

Nope, that's not it. I think the bird is a parrot that he has stolen from the local village. The prison is like Dartmoor. And I seem to remember that most of the programme takes place at night.
the prisoner with patrick mcgoohan??
It sounds like The Night Visitor (1971) starring Max von Sydow, Trevor Howard, Liv Ullmann and Andrew Keir.

Salem (Von Sydow) is put in the bleakest of prisons and breaks out each night to get revenge on those who put him there. He is eventually given away by a noisy bird that he smuggled in.

That's it. Thanks very much, that has been bugging me for years.
Shows how my mind works - when you said a bird I thought you meant a woman!!!
