I started taking a weeks course of metronidazole today. However I am aware that I cant drink on these antibiotics and after reading some of the stories on here I don't think it's a good idea to combine the too!!! Anyway that wouldn't normally be a problem but I'm going out this weekend to celebrate a friends birthday and would really like a drink. If I stop taking the tables over the weekend and start again on Monday would it be a real problem?? Would it just mean the gum infection I'm taking them for would take longer to clear up??

The reason why people say not to take antibiotics and drink is the alcohol stops them from working. it used to be a common myth amongst my friends and myself in our teenage years that it would get us even more drunk, but we were wrong and only doing more harm to ourselves.
PLEASE - HEED THE WARNING - DO NOT DRINK ANY ALCOHOL WITH THIS TYPE OF ANTIBIOTIC. The side effects are truly hideous, there are bad side effects with this drug as it is - sickness, diarrohea, stomach upsets, which cant be avoided Im afraid, but that is why you must not drink any alcoholic beverage with this type of medicine, some antibiotics you CAN have a drink with but please dont with this one, its nasty. Belh bleh. You wont be able to stop and start the tablets either as the drug will already in your system. No drinkies for you Im afraid unless you want a bad case of the vomits. Can you not start them Monday instead?

Listen to Roughquest. Lots of antibiotics you can drink with-just stops em working so well, but this one is one of the ones you really mustn't drink with.
Just checked some sites on the drug which say...

Do not drink alcohol while taking metronidazole. Flushing, fast heartbeats, nausea, and vomiting may occur when alcohol is ingested during metronidazole therapy.

Alcohol: IMPORTANT: AVOID ALCOHOL

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/us pdi/202365.html
Drinking alcoholic beverages while taking this medicine may cause stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, or flushing or redness of the face. Other alcohol-containing preparations (for example, elixirs, cough syrups, tonics) may also cause problems. These problems may last for at least a day after you stop taking metronidazole. Also, this medicine may cause alcoholic beverages to taste different. Therefore, you should not drink alcoholic beverages or take other alcohol-containing preparations while you are taking this medicine and for at least 3 days after stopping it.

A view from a GP about drinking alcohol with this drug.
You wont be able to have any alcohol either for 3 days after you have completed the course as it needs time to dissipate from your system.

Its a miserable drug all round this one.
