Assuming you are a British citizen using the visa waiver scheme, then it just needs to be valid at the end of your planned visit.

The US normally require 90 days but this is a concession for British (and some other) passports.

If you are travelling on one of the holiday airlines they may have T&C of booking that differ from this so check with them.
The travel companies and airlines I have travelled with have insisted that your passport should be valid for at least six months after the date of your expected return.
you must have a full six months on your passport before you can enter the USA. If you have less than that, I would be renewing it now.
Have a nice holiday.
Interesting range of answers,,,,,,

I wonder how legitimate it is for an airline or travel company to require its customers to have a passport valid for far longer than the official immigration policy of the country being visited?
If an airline allows a passenger to travel to the USA without valid documents for the duration of the trip and it is discovered on arrival at the destination, the immigration authority will fine the airline many hundreds of dollars, not the passenger. The six month rule has been in existence for some time now but these rules tend to change without much fanfare.
Check with the US Embassy, by phone or on-line and double check with the airline concerned.
