My daughter already had one, but she also went to Lloyds and got a basic account there. I was surprised that Nationwide closed her account, as she had been a customer for several years, had problems for 3 months earlier this year - their fault as much as hers, as she had cancelled dd's, but they failed to do it. (they had previously refused her a small overdraft for just these occasions) She then kept her account clean from July this year. They send out a blanket letter saying they are closing accounts and pay back your overdraft (bear in mind she didn't have one) - so be aware, Nationwide do close your account. I was of a mind to write to the head honcho, and complain, but didn't bother. I will do that early next year when I change my mortgage and put that as one reason for doing it. Family loyalty and all that!!!!
