Stars for good answers

Don't know where to ask this question, but I'm pretty new to AB, and I sometimes notice people awarding each other 'stars' for their replies. I've had quite a bit of help from others and simply thanked them - is the stars thing a convention or good AB manners or what? And how do you do it?

When you post a question and someone posts an answer... below their name it says "rate this answer" and "report".
Simply click "rate this answer" and choose one of the 4 options.
