"Conkers" are the seeds, in the form of nuts, of the Horse Chestnut. These are inedible. You need chestnuts from a (sweet) chestnut tree (no horses involved).
Frankly though, I find that the smell of chestnuts roasting is 100% nicer than any form of hideous taste they produce. But that�s my view. Give them a go if you see someone roasting them and see for yourself.
