after months of trying to figure it out, it turned out to be a fault on the fuel tank cap! the tanks have a vacuum in them so that you get a fuel tank reading (on your dash) all the time and not just when you turn the ignition on. have a look at your cap and if it has a tiny hole in it, it could be the same problem. it happened to my car on longer journeys and just removing the cap (you will hear a sucking noise) solved it for a hundred miles or so and was totally solved when i managed to get a new cap.
it's a long shot, but you never know. good luck.
I remember many years ago having problems with a motorcycle.. I took it to the mechanic and he asked if I had cleaned the bike lately and used polish.. (I had).. turned out the polish was blocking the tiny breather hole in the petrol cap.

If the popping is only for the first mile or so and it happens on damp days, it could be your ht leads have absorbed moisture. Try spraying them with WD40 when the engine is cold. (I had that problem on a Renault 5 that ran ok apart from wet, damp, cold days)
When the car was serviced did they put the right oil in? I know next to nothing about cars but I had an escort that had to have a better grade of oil than normal or else it stuttered and misfired. I remember one particular incident with a large tyre and exhaust company who offered a free oil change when you bought a new tyre. I won't have to explain what happened as soon as I drove the car from the garage. But it was stated quite clearly in the handbook what oil had to be used. I think normal oil is grade 20/20? and the oil that the escort needed was 20/40? I'm sure someone can correct me on that.
