i've seen this expression on birding sites but i don't know what it means.is it something to do with using a bird's call on tape to attract and capture it?

There are now many questions on data that was previously collected using audio tape to lure birds into mist-nets for capture and data collection.
One obvious situation is were an abundence of male specimens are captured, this would have been noted as a season that hens were in shortage but in reality the males were merely reacting to a 'rival' into their breeding territory.
Often single inferior specimens are caught because, dispite their depleting condition thru being chased by breeding pairs, they still hoped the 'tape-lure' would produce a prospective mate.
It is thus easy to see that biased info has been collected.
