What else is happening in your life? How stressed/tired/short of time are you? I have to concentrate when I'm reading, I find it very hard work and don't understand how people read to relax! Occasionally I've found it better to give up on a book for a few weeks and come back to it when I've got the energy.
I have exactly the same problem - I'm not sure if it is that I have changed my tastes or Messrs Pratchett and Rankin have changed their styles over the years - the last Pratchett I finished was ages ago - Night Watch maybe - I miss the old characters. Same for Rankin - the Brentford books were great but I cannot settle into later ones. You are not alone. I am still an avid reader, averaging a book per week and typically three at once so it is not a concentration issue for me.
You are perfectly normal. I too cannot get into Pratchett or Rankin (never tried Holt, but as someone whose opinion I absolutely do not trust likes Holt...).
Maybe you just really fancy reading an easy going book for a change before going back to the ones you mention where you need to concentrate the whole time!
