Trying to stop constant barking -help needed.
5 Answers
My 12 year old Standard Schnauzer has recently (over the last couple of years) become very anxious when left in the house and barks constantly. My other dog then copies him and both are at it whenever we go out. Up intil a couple of years ago this never happened. He has alwys been a very good guard dog and I think he now feels very vulnerable as he also has a bit of a back problem. He goes out twice a day for a short walk -due to his back. I have tried the bark alarms and lots of other suggestions but nothing works. I have tried giving him the run of the house or confining him to 1 or 2 rooms. The only thing I haven't tried is tranquilisers -does anyone know if these are likely to work or reasons why I shouldn't try them. My neighbours are complaining which is fair enough so I must do something.

My old girl of 14 barks sometimes when I get home and I go up behind her and she hasn't realised I am there.
Be very wary of sedatives, they can have varying effects on dogs of the same breed. There are a range of homeopathic 'calmers' that you can get, or you could try Bach Rescue Remedy. I would definitely try a herbal or homeopathic remedy before resorting to tranquilisers.

I really feel for you, as I'm in the same situation except my dog whines (very loudly) whenever he's left. He's been doing it for about 6 months and is 11ish (don't know for sure as he was a rescue dog). I've tried everything, but nothing works. My neighbours are also complaining. I've got an appointment at the vets tomorrow, so will let you know what they have said. I have a horrible feeling, with Max it is going to be bad news, a tumor or something, as he's just not himself, he keeps wondering in circles, and wimpers even when I'm with him.
I think barking is somehow easier to deal with, and perhaps it is just a case of him going a bit deaf. I hope he will be OK
