Although I am in charge of the computer at work, some of the material on it needs to be accessible to others. On the other hand, use for internet access is restricted to me and I am rather fed up with people sneaking to use it for internet access when I am away for lunch, etc. because on occasion it has got corrupted. Before I (slightly reluctantly - I wish I did not have to, because of the implication that the five other individuals cannot be trusted) set up a bar to internet access I would really like to catch out those who ignore the ban. Is there any form of log that is (and I am unaware of) or can be set up on the machine which records every time and duration of logging onto the net ?
Is this a stand alone computer, or is it connected to a network (do you have a server for example)?
What operating system are you running ?
The other people that need to access the data on your computer, do they do it while sitting at YOUR computer, or do they access the data from THEIR computer?
I ask these question because there may be some solutions, but it depends on how your PC is set up.
Thanks for that - it is a stand-alone in XP. Locking the computer at any point is not an option because it must at all times be available for some of the material. However, it has occurred to me that the ISP's site gives me access to the full log of internet connection including total time on ! Ultimately I will bar internet access using a password. this one is now solved.
