Quark doesn't actually retain the pictures. Unlike MS Word which embeds the images which you can then copy/paste into another program, Quark merely shows a 'ghost' image of the original picture. For example, when a Quark file is printed out it requires the original image file to be linked to it. If there are no other images files (i.e,. jpgs, eps, tiff) on CD then you effectively won't be able to access the images.
