Rump steak?

I'm going to cook rump steak tonight along with some chips (of course)..
However I need some ideas.
I'm not sure how to cook the actual steak - I know it's a cheap cut, so should I grill it or pan fry it? What would be the best method for medium-done?

Also I have some mushrooms, how should I cook them to serve with it? (I've never grilled mushrooms before *blush*)

Tenderise the meat first, as rump can be quite tough. You don't have to buy a tenderizer, just use your knuckles to 'knead' the meat.

To cook it, heat a frying pan until piping hot (no oil) and then add the steak (season as required). Turn ONCE only. If you want it rare 5 mins will do, if you want it medium/well done then up to 10 mins.

For the mushrooms, try baking them in the oven for about 15-20 mins in tinfoil with a knob of butter and plenty of freshly ground black pepper. Or better still, quarter them and cook in a saucepan with said butter/pepper but add sliced onion. Delicious!

Do you mean 10 minutes for both sides (for medium done) or 10 mins for each side?

i'd say Champagne prob meant overall cooking time, I'd slice and chuck the mushrooms in with the steak a few mins before the end. If you're having red wine with it, deglaze the pan at the end for a bit of sauce

The red wine at the end is a good idea. Keep the pan hot and throw in a splash of red wine and it should quickly reduce down to a syrupy texture.
